Sunday 31st July - Freshwater Bay Mixed Open/ Nerissa Groombridge Trophy

On a beautiful day at the Bay 24 pairs took part in the Freshwater Bay Mixed Open, with the scores reflecting the good conditions.

The winners with 41 points were Ian and Sue Thompson. 2nd place went to Steve Sargeant and Sheila Francis with 39 points, beating Fred and Ann Smith on count back.

Saturday 30th July - Lucy keeps up the good form.

Lucy Burke picked up her 2nd trophy in 3 days as she shot a nett 3 under par score around Knowle Park in Kent to win the Girls Section of the Junior Open. Her recent good form has seen 2 shots knocked off her handicap.

Friday 29th July - A First “Major “ for Alex

Alex Harmer, who just missed out on the placings at Brokenhurst, more than made up for it on Friday with a score of 42 points and 1st place in the Hampshire Under 12’s Invitational. This achievement was all the more impressive as Alex had never played the course before. Alex is now playing off 23 and is sure to get even lower quite quickly the way he is playing.

Thursday 28th July - Two Wins in One Day for the Burkes!

Paula Burke and her guest Helen Whitaker from Westridge won the Freshwater Bay Golf Club Ladies Invitation with a very impressive score of 48 points, winning by 4 from Sue Oldershaw and Christine Smith from Shanklin & Sandown. 

Meanwhile over in the New Forest Paula’s daughter Lucy was picking up 1st prize in the girls section of the Brokenhurst Junior Open. Also doing well at Brokenhurst was George Faulkner who picked up the prize for the best Under 13 score.

Freshwater Bay Golf Club Mens Championship

Nat Riddett secured his maiden Freshwater Bay Men's Championship with some fine golf played over the two days. His 2 under par round of 67 on the Saturday was all the more remarkable as he was 3 over par after the 1st 2 holes. This was enough to give him a 5 shot lead over Steven Cooke (72) and one further adrift were the current holder Brandon Thompson and 4 time winner Derek Wright.

Nat's nett 64 was also good enough to be leading the handicap event at the halfway stage, with only 2 other people (Steven Cooke, 66 and Jim Whitehead, 67) managing to play under their handicap.

On the Sunday, in slightly easier conditions, Derek secured 3rd place with a 72 to give him a total of 145. Brandon shot a level par 69, to secure 2nd place (142), and Nat scored a consistent 72 to give himself a 3 shot winning margin.

In the Afton Trophy (handicap event) Nat's score of 133 was just good enough for the trophy, with Jim Whitehead in 2nd after scoring to consecutive 67s for 134. Jim was also the clear winner in the A T Smith (Over 60s), winning by 8 from Richard Couse. The Sunday Tankard winner was Russell Macgregor who improved by 10 on his Saturday score to shoot a 64.

George Faulkner - More wins; another big cut!

George Faulkner continues to impress on his away travels. He went to Oak Park to play in The Hampshire Junior Championships and won the Under 14 Nett Competition. This follows on from being in the prizes two days beforehand at the North Hants Junior Open. George has lost another 3 shots off his handicap since the middle of March and is now playing off 9.

Change of Caterer

As from today Sue Keen is back as the caterer of Freshwater Bay Golf Club. There will be limited catering for the first couple of days as she settles in but she expects that from Thursday full service will be resumed.

Easter was HOT HOT HOT!!

Two trophies were decided over the Easter bank holidays, as well as the annual Captain-Vice Captain match that was played on the Saturday

The Freshwater Lifeboat Trophy was played on Good Friday and the winning pair was Liz Morris and Di Clark. Their winning score of 49 points was 3 points clear of 2nd place pair Sammi Keen & Kevin Garrett, with the 3rd place pairing of Steven Cooke and James Ebdon one further back on 46

Ernies Two Ball Scramble on Easter Monday was a much tighter affair with 4th place only finishing 0.75 of a shot behind the winners. Fourth were Miles Oldershaw and Jim Whitehead with 61.75. Third place on 61.5 was the pairing of Sammi Keen and Di Clark with 61.5. Kevin Garrett and Kevin McArthur were 2nd on 61.25. The winners on 61 were Nat Riddett and Conor White, with Conor holing a crucial putt on the last to clinch victory.

Both trophies were presented on Easter Monday and this was followed by the Easter Raffle being drawn. There is a list of winners in the Clubhouse and if you are one of the lucky ones but have not yet collected your prize then please ask at the bar.

On Thursday the Ladies played the Centenary Foursomes Qualifier. This was an even closer result than Ernies Two Ball, with the top 3 pairs all having the same score of 37 points. The winners on count back were Sue Keen & Maureen Couse with Di Clark and Liz Morris in 2nd place and 3rd going to Pat Long & Jan Smith.

The Captains team ran out comfortable winners against the Vice Captains. There were some very good scores returned with best of them being 49 points by Bill Hinchen & John Sexton. The Captain is confident that this win is going to set the tone for the season.

Summer here we come!!

The first Seniors Alliance of the year took place on Tuesday at Ventnor with Freshwater getting off to a good start in defence of the Shield. Keith Kimber won the Gaile Cup with 37 points and Peter Scott secured 3rd with a score of 33 points.

The ever popular ‘Irons Only’ event took place on Sunday. Thirty one players took the woods out the bag and the scores as always in this event were truly impressive. Robbie Faulkner won the event with a staggering 44 points. Rick Penn and Dave Wright both scored 39 points with Rick securing 2nd spot due to his better back 9. 4th spot was Barry Crook with 38 points.

The Saturday Stableford Division 1 was won by Dean Capel with 40 points. Derek Wright scored a level par round to gain 2nd with 39, beating Steven Cooke into 3rd who also scored 39. In Division 2 Gary Cooke matched his son, also scoring 39 to gain 3rd. The captains curse of playing badly is yet to strike Steve Sargeant as he secured 2nd with 40 points. John Riddelsdell scored the best round of the day with a score of 42 points.

Super 7's!!!

On Sunday (27/3/2011) Freshwater Bay played away to Newport in the 1st Round of the County Sevens. Derek Wright, our County 7s Captain was in the first match out and the last to finish in what turned out to be the deciding result. After a titanic battle he finally triumphed on the 25th hole to secure us a 4-3 win. Well done to all the team, and good luck in the next round.

News from the Bay - Marching into Summer??

Congratulations to the Lady Mail on Sunday Team who have now progressed to the 4th Round after travelling to Barton-on-Sea on Monday and gaining a comfortable win.

The team of Liz Morris, Sammi Keen, Susan Keen, Janet Hurd & Anne Smith did not lose a game between them which is a great achievement considering they were away from home.


In the Daily Mail Foursomes the Freshwater Bay duo of Joan Martin & Paula Burke are also progressing well, gaining a fine win away at Ryde.


The EWGA Medal on Thursday produced some very good golf. Sammi Keen won the Silver Division with a 68.In the bronze division Jan Smith & Rita Smith both scored 69s, with Jan picking up the prize due to her better back 9. It was a good day for the Smiths with Anne coming 3rd with 70.

Due to the idyllic conditions there has been some very low scoring amongst the men.

In the 1st Division of the Par Competition on Saturday Richard Frosts plus 4 was only good enough for 3rd place. 2nd was Dean Capel with plus 5 and Nick Riby scored a brilliant plus 6 to win. The 2nd Division was won by Malc Williams on plus 5, Jack Ince was 2nd with plus 3 and John Sexton took 3rd with plus 2.

The Sunday Stableford saw equally impressive winning scores. In Division 1 Kasey Tuckey shot a 1 under par gross score of 68 which gained him 43 points. Stuart Morris scored 41 points for 2nd spot and Ian Ball was 3rd with 39 points. Division 2 was won by Simon Fisher with 43 points with Barry Finch keeping up his good run of form coming 2nd on 37 and Keith Kimber 3rd on 36 points.

RACE NIGHTA big thank you to John Sexton for organizing a very successful night, and to both Sarah & John for being the bookies. I think the Captain’s wife, Gladys, must have bribed John early on in the evening as she seemed to have winnings to pick up after nearly every race! She even won the last auctioned race of the night with her husband only managing a miserly 3rd place finish.

The menu looks very appetizing and with the added attraction of the melodic voice of the Senior Captain and his friends to listen to I would suggest to book early as numbers will be limited.

Dave McArthur is in Thailand at the moment on a bingo callers course and so should be in tip top form for this. For those of you who like to do 5 cards at once be warned, he is going to be quick!

RESULTS

Tuesday 15^th March

Congratulations to Miles Oldershaw and Di Clark who were victorious in the Ladies and Senior Greensome. Their score of 37 points was one better than Mike Dowsett and Jackie Evitts with Ray Cooke and Rita Smith taking 3^rd spot with 35 points. I am not sure what inspired the turnaround in the Seniors Captain and the Lady Captain, but after only managing a miserly 8 points on the front 9 Paddy  Hodgson and Jan Godden accumulated a very impressive 23 points on the back 9.

Sunday 13^th March

Division 1     The Sunday Stableford gave the impression of being a Junior Old Boys benefit with 4 of the top 5 places going to players to have represented the junior team in the last 3 years. First was Steven Cooke with a very impressive 42 points playing off 7 handicap. Adam Keen kept up his good form to record 41 points with Kasey Tuckey taking 3^rd on 40 points. Just out the prizes but definitely worth a mention was Nick Punter in 4^th place on 38 points. Playing off a 12 handicap Nick played the back 9 holes in 1 under par gross to amass 25 points.

Division 2  Ian Sinclair, playing in his first ever qualifier, took the honours with 41 points and saw his newly acquired handicap of 15 get cut straight away to 14. The 2^nd and 3^rd spots saw a titanic struggle between the captain and his vice captain, who were playing together.  In the end the more experienced Ray Cooke prevailed with 38 points with Steve Sargeant one adrift on 37 points.

A February weekend full of shocks and skill!!

Another busy golfing weekend at Freshwater Bay started on Friday afternoon with the Juniors Half-Term Stableford, which saw Conor White post a winning score of 39 points, and have his handicap reduced to 12.

Saturday’s Medal competition had good scores in both divisions. Division 1 was won by Colin Jones with a very impressive nett 65 with James Sanders & Nick Riby one shot adrift on 66. In division 2 Tony Hammonds and Jack Ince both posted scores of 68 with Tony winning the division on a better back 9. Third place went to Chris Edmonds-Smith.

Saturday also played host to the final of the Freshwater Bay Winter Foursomes, with the winners going on to represent the club in the next stage of the Daily Mail Foursomes competition. Two time winners Kevin Garrett & Bill Hinchen looked favourites to win it for a third time as they won the first 3 holes but Bob Godden (pictured below in warmer times) & George Thomson fought back valiantly with some stunning golf. After 16 holes, Godden and Thomson were 1 up, and on the 17th George Thomson sunk a long birdie putt from just off the green to secure victory with their third birdie of the day.

Sunday morning’s Stableford competition saw 33 entrants battle it out, producing some impressively high scores. In Division 1 Adam Keen eclipsed his 2nd place of last week with a very impressive 44 points. Derek Wright claimed 2nd spot with a gross level par to get 39 points with Kevin Garrett 2 further adrift on 37 points. The 2nd Division saw outstandingly high scores considering the conditions. First place went to left-hander James Ebdon, who carded a score of 45 points to secure glory. James (pictured below) joined Freshwater Bay in April last year as a 28 handicap and is now playing off just 12 .

 

Justin Clayton came 2nd with 41 points and young David Hartley was 3rd with 40 points. Only 2 players had not looked up the weather forecast and so decided to venture out in the afternoon. Even John Meredith and John Riddlesdell finally succumbed to the elements. They were on the 6th hole before an onslaught of rain, wind and hail forced them off the course.

BUSY WEEK AT THE BAY

Many Happy Returns to Miss Winn George who celebrates her 80^th Birthday today. Winn was our Lady Captain in 1994 and the ladies helped her to celebrate with a glass of wine and a rousing rendition of Happy Bithday after golf on Thursday.

The first of five busy days of golf at Freshwater Bay was Wednesday’s hotly contested Better-Ball Stableford. Nine pairs entered and the top two carded an impressive score of 42 points, but Dennis Smith & Chris Tansley’s back nine of 22 points was not good enough to beat eventual winners Ray Cooke and John Herbert, who had 24 points on the back 9.

Thursday saw the Ladies EWGA Medal played in breezy conditions. Joanne Wright was the winner of the Silver division, with a nett 70 including 4 birdies, and the Bronze division was won by Rita Smith, who scored a nett 76. Sammi Keen was second overall, with a nett score of 72, seeing her handicap reduced to 8.

Friday played host to the re-scheduled Veterans Stableford, and Ray Cooke, Peter Scott and John Mew all posted a good score of 39 points, but the Seniors Vice-Captain Richard Couse scored 41 points to win the day, and had his handicap cut to 13.

Two competitions were played on Saturday, with the men’s Stableford being won by Nick Riby with a score of 41, Keith Kimber was in second place with a score of 38, and Dennis Smith came third with a score of 35. Following their victory over Brockenhurst 2 weeks ago, the Ladies Section played the second round of the Mail on Sunday Classic, against fellow Islanders Osborne. 5 of the finest from each side started the singles match play in foggy conditions, and by the 5^th hole the visibility was such that the match was put on hold and the players returned to the clubhouse. An hour later the fog had sufficiently cleared, and the ladies returned to the course to continue the match in much sunnier weather. After the first 4 matches had finished, the score was 2.5 – 1.5 in Freshwater’s favour, and team captain Sue Keen secured a half on the 18^th hole, making the final score 3-2 to Freshwater, and allowing the ladies to progress on to the 3^rd round. During the speeches, another rendition of Happy Birthday was sung to Osborne’s team Captain Gillian Fahy, who was celebrating her birthday that day.

The week concluded with Sundays re-scheduled February Monthly Medal, which saw 35 entrants compete for glory. The lowest gross of the day was an impressive 72 from Derek Wright, and third place overall went to junior Conor White, who scored a nett 66. Both Miles Oldershaw and Adam Keen carded a respectable nett 65, but Miles came out on top with a back nine of only one over par, which was good enough to knock Adam into second place.

Pub Quiz - Freshwater Bay Golf Club (11/2/2011)

It was a wet and windy evening; the finest and sharpest minds gathered with great expectation with Rita Smith waiting in anticipation. No this was not world peace talks, but the first Freshwater Bay Golf Clubs inaugural Pub Quiz.
