Captains Day 2012

With conditions near on perfect, FBGC Captain Ray Cooke hosted his captain's day on Saturday. With punishing rough to go with slick greens the scores were nevertheless very good.

The best junior prize was decided on countback, with Sam Barber coming out on top over Josh Macgregor. In the Ladies, Elaine Hunter was the early pace setter, but in the very final group of the day Di Clark scored a brilliant 40 points to secure victory.

The men's competition was a tight affair, with Kevin McArthur looking favourite to win it with 1 hole to go. However, after finding trouble on the last, his 39 points was only good enough for 3rd place, with Tony Keen pipping him on countback. One of the elder statesman of the field, Dennis Smith showed that age is no barrier to playing good golf, shooting a brilliant 40 points to win.

During the presentation Ray thanked the membership of Freshwater Bay for their support throughout the year. Dennis Smith thanked Ray for putting on such a well run event. Geoff Smith, FBGC Vice Captain, finished proceedings by wishing both Ray and his wife Ann a successful conclusion to his year as Captain.

BROKENHUST JUNIOR OPEN 2012

In sweltering conditions, and against a field of 84 players from all around Hampshire, two Freshwater Bay Golfers won the major trophies on offer at the 2012 Brokenhurst Junior Open. The best gross competition was a very close run thing, with Ryan Harmer's finish of par, birdie, par winning him the competition on countback over the last 3 holes. This made it 2 wins in his last 2 Hampshire outings, following on from his Hayling Junior Open win last month.

Ryan's score of 66 put him in a tie for lead in the handicap event, but winning it on countback with a great back 9 score of 30.5 was Lucy Burke.

This is the 2nd year running that Lucy has been in the prizes (winning the best junior girl last year,) and her gross score of 78 was also the best score by a girl at this year's event.

Freshwater Bay Junior Captain, David Hartley also set a fine example to the rest of his team by picking up the prize for neatest card of the day!!!!

Ladies Invitation

If the sun shines on the righteous then the Ladies of Freshwater Bay must be so. The yearly Ladies Invitation was held on Thursday 26th July with a field of fifty ladies set off for a 4 ball better ball stableford competition. With the sun beating down but a gentle breeze, sun lotion applied liberally, twenty five ladies from Freshwater with their guests from other Island clubs, were ably started by Senior Captain Richard Couse. Yet again the scores were very close with the eventual winners coming in with 41 pts. Jan Smith and her partner Brenda Keyte from Shanklin and Sandown pipped Elaine Hunter and Kath Harding also from Shanklin and Sandown with another 41 pts scored by Liz Morris and Jean Munds also from S/S. The front nine went to Gail Brown and Marion Johnston from Ryde with 23 pts and the back to Carol Taylor and Carol Bradshaw from Newport on 22 pts.

Nearest the pin was Rita Smith who won the bottle of wine which she donated and the 2's sweep was divided between Kath Harding and Di Clark.

As players came in very thirsty and hot they were greeted with a glass of Pimms and were very well served with a lunch and sweet.

Many red faces and tired legs but a great day for Freshwater Bay and friends.

Ladies Club Championship

The Ladies of Freshwater Bay took to the hills again for their Club Championships.

On Sunday the weather wasn't too kind but Sammi managed a great gross 76 to be in the lead from Lucy Burke on 81. It was always thought to be a two horse race for the main prize and on the second day (Thursday) Sammi proved that bit stronger coming in with a gross 79 to take the title. Lucy was a very deserving second place with Liz Morris taking third.

In the handicap trophy yet again Sammi and Lucy kept up the pressure and took the first two slots with Carole Taylor coming 3rd, Mum Paula kept the flag flying for the Burke family coming 4th and Liz Morris 5th.

A prize for each 18 holes was then presented to Joan Martin and Sheila Francis. After the presentation the Ladies enjoyed a well earned lunch.

Club Championship Weekend

Last weekend was the Freshwater Bay Golf Club Championship, and the competitors were nearly able to play 36 holes without getting wet!! Setting the pace at the half way stage was Nat Riddett, with a very good gross score of 70. In second place was Miles Oldershaw, with 73, and Keith Wright was a further shot adrift. Miles’s round also saw him sharing the lead with Geoff Smith and Justin Clayton in the Afton Down ( Handicap ) trophy, each carding 65s.

In the 2nd round on the Sunday, Nat continued his good form, posting a score of 71, combined score of 141, and Freshwater Bay Golf Club Champion for the second year running. Keith Wright repeated his Saturday score, to finish 2nd on 148, with Ryan Harmer taking 3rd with a combined score of 149 (75, 74.) Ryan’s score was good enough to win him the Junior Championship, with Lucy Burke taking 2nd.

All other trophies were taken by Geoff Smith ( much to the chagrin of the Secretary, who had bet on Miles Oldershaw and Justin Clayton!!!!) who followed up his 65 on the Saturday with an absolutely stunning round of 63, total 128. This gave him a 7 shot winning margin in the Afton Down from Nat Riddett, and saw him comfortably win the A T Smith Veterans Trophy, as well as The Sunday Tankard.
