FRESHWATER BAY GOLF CLUB CHARITY CHALLENGE 2015

The weather was perfect at Freshwater Bay Golf Course on Sunday as a field of 96 golfers from around the Island and Mainland set off in the Annual FBGC Charity Challenge, which this year was in aid of the ABILITY DOGS 4 YOUNG PEOPLE, an IOW Charity dedicated to providing assistance dogs to young adults suffering with disabilities.

Individual Winner Derek Wright with Club Captain, Steve Orchard
The scores certainly reflected the ideal conditions.

Winning the individual event was Derek Wright with 44 points and a 4 under par gross score of 65.
In second place was Sammi Keen, whose 1 under par score of 70 equalled the current ladies course record.
Miles Oldershaw took third spot with 41 points.
Although not in the prizes James Veal is worth a mention as he also went round in 4 under par

Gail Brown, Ann Smith, Liz Morris & Di Clark, team winners
The team event was won by Gail Brown, Di Clark, Liz Morris and Ann Smith, with 127 points.
There were 2 teams on 126 points, with John Allen, Bill Hinchen, Sammi Keen and Chris Tansley winning on countback from Bob Godden, Jan Godden, Joan Martin and Chris Sprackling.

In the pairs event 3rd place went to Sammi Keen and Chris Tansley on 76 points, 2nd was Derek and Brian Wright, losing on countback to Miles Oldershaw and Keith Kimber, both pairs getting 79 points.
Sammi’s score of 43 points also saw her pick up the best ladies prize, with Liz Morris in 2nd place on 39 points and Elaine Hunter in 3rd on 38 points.

John Allen won the best away player with 40 points, Ernie Smith was 2nd on 38 points and Xavier Bishop was 3rd on 37 points.

After the golf, a demonstration was given by the Ability Dogs 4 Young People team that showed how the trained dogs can enhance the lives of young people suffering with disabilities.

Running alongside the golf was a charity raffle, with many businesses and individuals from around the Island donating prizes. The proceeds of this and the golf day meant that the grand total raised for the charity was £1780.

During the presentation FBGC Captain Steve Orchard thanked everybody that had contributed in making the day such a resounding success, and this was echoed by Carol Court, the founder of Ability Dogs 4 Young People.

15th July - MIDWEEK STABLEFORD

Well, I have to say that I thought the handicap software had developed a glitch, the scores were that good!!

Round of the day went to Ollie McArthur who scored an amazing 47 points even with a blob on the 14th! His cousin, Tom Dye was not too shabby either with 46 points, (with a blob on the 15th). This saw them sharing 1st and 2nd spot in Division 2, with Josh Macgregor 3rd on 40 points.

Watch out boys, the Secretary has sharpened that handicap axe!!

There was still good golf played in Division 1, but at least the scores were nearer the average. Miles Oldershaw won with 42 points, with Chris West second on 39 and George Faulkner 3rd on 38 points.

FBGC ISLAND GAMES FUNDRAISER

On behalf of the Island Games Ladies Golf Team a very big thank you to all competitors and sponsors who helped make this such a great day.

To help with the costs of sending a ladies golf team to the Island Games being held in Jersey this year, 108 golfers turned out at Freshwater Bay Golf Club on Sunday to play in an Open Scramble. The day was a great success, with good golf being played throughout the day. This was followed by a raffle, with over £1100 being raised through this alone. There has been great generosity shown by Island businesses in donating prizes to the raffle table, and this certainly contributed to the success of the day. Special mention goes to LCM Systems, whose donation of £250 went to contributing to the golf prizes
The top places in the golf itself was a very tight affair, with only 1.3 shots covering the first 5 teams.
The prize winners of the golf were;

1st        Bob Godden, Jan Godden, Joan Martin, Chris Sprackling                55.1
2nd        Steve Cooke, George Faulkner, Robbie Faulkner, Josh Sturt            55.5
3rd        Kevin Garrett, Bill Hinchen, Hugh Morrison, Steve Sargeant           55.6
Best non competition handicap team              Conor White, Steve Orchard, Andy Rann, Dan Burgess                   54.75

Nearest the Pin on the 3rd –     Lady    Mary Rawling
Man     Richard Daniels
Nearest the Pin on the 14th  – Lady    Sue Keen
Man     Doug Stephen

At the end of the presentation, three members of the Island Games Golf Team, Sammi Keen, Lucy Burke and Carol Bingham, thanked everyone for their tremendous support, and announced that the final figure raised was £1700.

14th January - Midweek Medal

On his return from sunnier climes, John Griffiths showed that he is a man for all weathers by winning this event comfortably with a nett 70. Second was Hugh Morrison on 73, with Derek Wright one shot further adrift in 3rd.

January 1st - Peter Guy Memorial Trophy

In tough conditions there was still a good turnout for the annual new year's day greensome.

Continuing the theme of previous years it was a father/son combination that triumphed, with Garry Cooke and Steve Cooke winning by 2 from Keith Wright and Bill Hinchen. However, there was some debate as to whether Keith should have been penalised 2 shots for taking longer than 5 minutes to look for his Driver head when it flew into the gorse off the 11th tee!
In 3rd place was another father/son pair of Robbie & George Faulkner.
