Captains' Drive-in 2012
In sunny, but cold conditions, Freshwater Bay Golf Club’s new captains hosted their first engagement in their captaincy year on Sunday 15th January 2012, with the captains’ drive in.
The incoming Club Captain, Ray Cooke, ,ladies’ captain Maureen Couse, seniors captain Richard Couse and junior captain David Hartley all played shots towards the 18th green, with Maureen showing the men how it should be done by putting her ball to within 10 feet of the pin.
Preceding the drive in, over 50 golfers took part in a 10 hole competition. The men’s division saw last year’s senior Captain Paddy Hodgson come 2nd on 19 points, beating 3 others with his better back 9, but the winner on 20 points was Jim Payne. Miles Oldershaw won the nearest the pin.
The Ladies nearest the pin was won by Lucy Burke with her mother, Paula picking up 2nd place in the Ladies 10 hole competition. Beating Paula by 1 point with a winning score of 18 points was Liz Morris.
During the presentation of the prizes, Ray Cooke thanked the club’s members for supporting the event, and wished everyone well for the 2012 golfing season.

What a weekend!!!!
The good weather led to large entries in all 3 competitions this weekend, as well as very good scores.
Some players maintained their good form through the weekend with Bill Lavers, Chris Miles and David Wright picking up prizes on 2 out of the 3 days. Bill was unlucky not to make it 3 out of 3, only losing out on a prize on Sunday by count back.
Best performance of the weekend definitely went to John Burke, the winner of the January Medal by 3 shots. John’s gross score of 71 also secured him the scratch prize.
On Sunday, Miles Oldershaw celebrated his birthday in style by winning Division 1 in the stableford with 41 points, with 3 tied on 40 points. The division 2 winner was John Riddelsdell with 40 points.

A Busy Christmas Period
Below is a small selection of all the activity that has gone on at the Bay over the Christmas period.
Saturday 24th December – Mystery Pairs
Tony Black had the best individual score (41 points), but unfortunately the luck of the draw was not kind to him, and he missed out on the prizes.
The winners were James Sanders and Barry Crook with 76 points (39 & 37),with Ray Cooke & Bill Hinchen second on 73,(34 & 37) and Simon Smith & Paul McDonald third on 70, (32 & 38.)
Monday 26th December – 3 Club Event
Dave Wright scored a highly impressive 23 points with his perfect club, 7 iron and putter. In 2nd place was Anne Smith with 21points and 3rd was Pete Miller with 20.
Monday 26th December – FBGCs Got Talent
A very big thank you to all who helped make this such a great success. From the performers to the audience, everyone played their part in making this a very entertaining afternoon
Sunday 1st January 2012 – Peter Guy Memorial Trophy
Well, what a way to start the new year!! Fog, torrential rain and some very good golf played. In 3rd place with 67.4 were Dennis Smith and Chris Miles. 2nd place went to Keith Kimber and James Ebdon with 64.8. Perhaps Barry Crook has made a new year’s resolution to play golf in all conditions, and if so it certainly paid off as he and Simon Smith won with a superb score of 63.6
Monday 2nd January - Yellow Ball Squared
Obviously there were a few rules queries before play commenced!!!!! The winning team was Dave Wright, Ian Ball & Nick Punter, with 145 points. Second place went to Bob Godden, Richard Couse & Pete Miller (136), and third were Barry Hunter, John Veal & Tony Keen (131)
