On another beautiful day at Freshwater Bay Golf Course a field of 90 golfers from around the Island and Mainland set off in the Annual FBGC Charity Challenge. Apart from a heavy shower that caught the early starters, the conditions were set up for good golf to be played and the competitors certainly did not disappoint!
James Veal produced the best golf of the day, beating the previous course record by 2 shots with a superb 6 under par round of 63. This gave him a stableford score of 42 points. However, this score was not good enough to get him into the singles prizes, with Keith Wright beating him on Count Back for 3rd place, Steve Orchard coming 2nd with 43 points and Chris Tansley, playing in the last group of the day, winning with an incredible 47 points!
Chris Tansley had a very good day, winning the Over 55’s, with Di Clark 2nd on 39, beating Geoff Smith on Count Back. Di Clark also won the Ladies, from Paula Burke on 37.
In the visitor’s category there was a great round played by Jack McLoughin (Ryde), who shot a 1 under par round to win on 39 points. Aidee Adams, also from Ryde came 2nd with 37 points.
During the presentation, Freshwater Bay Captain Geoff Smith thanked everyone for their support for such a worthwhile cause. He explained that the running costs of the service amounted to about £4,000 per day. He announced that, thanks to the generosity of the participants, local businesses and members that had donated prizes and Barclays Bank who had match funded the entry fee, the day had raised approximately £4,700 for the charity.
